Andrew Betlej

Andrew Betlej, age 100, of Bridgeport, passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by loved ones on Thursday, December 15, 2022. Born in 1922 in Hazleton, Pennsylvania to Ludwig and Anna Betley, Andrew was the third oldest of twelve children. He married his wife, Dorothy on October 18, 1952 and moved up to Connecticut where he worked at Sikorsky Aircraft for 39 years. Andrew could often be found in the backyard gardening, reading a book, trying to figure out a puzzle, playing Pinochle, or watching the Yankees and Giants play. A proud second-generation Polish immigrant, Andrew carried on his family's traditions to new generations and never got tired of being asked how to say things in Polish. Andrew loved spending time with his family and spoiling his grandchildren. Whether he was going to their games, admiring their artwork, tasting their culinary masterpieces, or watching them graduate, he always made sure they knew how proud he was of them. Andrew is survived by his beloved wife of 70 years, Dorothy, and three sisters; Anna, Sophia, and Louise. He is also survived by three children; David (Debbie) Betley, Kenneth (Diane) Betlej, and Jane (Alan) Legen; and six grandchildren; Christopher and Megan Betley, Katherine and Allison Betlej (fiancé Christopher Cybart), and Michael and Kimberly Legen. The family wishes to thank all of the hospice staff, especially Gloria. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, December 27, 2022 at 10:00 AM in St. Andrew Church at 435 Anton Street, Bridgeport.
