Urquidi, Juan “Alcibar” Urquidi, age 88, of Stratford, beloved husband of 50 years of Raquel Garate Urquidi, passed away peacefully on Monday, March 25, 2024 with his family by his side. Juan was born in the beautiful Basque Country in Barinaga-Markina, Spain on March 28, 1935 to the late Maria Alcibararichuluaga Urquidi and Benigno Urquidi, and was a resident of Stratford for 44 years. As a young man, he left Spain and traveled the world as a professional Jai-Alai player. He retired from Bridgeport and Milford Jai-Alai, where he was employed for 25 years. Juan loved the outdoors, planted an amazing vegetable garden every year and was an avid sports fan but his true passion was his family. In addition to his wife, Raquel, survivors include his daughter, Nagore Huntley and her husband, John, of Wilton, CT and his son Jon Urquidi, of Trumbull, CT as well as his five grandchildren who lovingly referred to him as ‘Aitaita’: John (‘Jack’) Patxi Huntley, Andrew (‘Drew’) Alcibar Huntley, Niko Patxi Urquidi, Gianna Josephine Urquidi and Danica Eve Urquidi. He is also survived by his six sisters and one brother: Gergoria, Eusebia, Maria, Jesusa, Josepha, Maria Dolores and Fernando all of Spain as well as many nieces, nephews and in-laws. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brothers, Jose and Jesus Maria of Idaho. Friends and loved ones are invited to attend a Memorial Mass on Tuesday, April 2, 2024 at 11:00 AM at St. Theresa Church, 5301 Main Street, Trumbull. Arranegments were entrusted to Galello-Luchansky Funeral Home, 2220 Main Street, Stratford. In lieu of flowers, those who so desire, may contribute to a charity of your choice in Juan’s memory.
